... to stream TV broadcasts over the internet in real time in a high image quality comparable to that offered by Japan's free-to-air digital TV services.
That would be separate from its existing youth-focused streaming service Go90, as well as from its FiOS service. The telecom has been piling up streaming rights from network owners and is said to be setting up a package with "dozens" of channels to be offered.

Our consumption of higher definition video across IP networks continues to grow exponentially, whether due to new broadcast modalities, new “broadcast yourself” trends, or increasing prevalence of UHD/4K channels. Video encoding and transportation represents a challenge because of high bandwidth requirements, and latency is an issue for live streaming. The H.265/HEVC codec can help, potentially saving half the transmission network bandwidth but at a cost of processing complexity that renders software-only implementations uneconomic for wide-scale deployment. Scalable real-time video processing can be achieved by leveraging hardware acceleration technology.
