Disney Buys One-Third of BAMTech for $1 Billion

Disney announced today that it is acquiring 33% of BAMTech, the tech services and video streaming division Major League Baseball for $1 billion. The deal gives Disney the option to acquire a majority stake in the coming years. With the investment, ESPN is planning to launch a new direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service.
Why This Matters: BAMTech is behind a wide range of OTT services, including HBO, WWE and many other top-tier video and TV entities. The company’s properties have 7.5 million total paid subscribers to its clients’ OTT products.
